Today we’d like to introduce you to Oleg Rivkin.
Oleg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my career in healing in Ukraine as what is called in the US a Physician’s Assistant – I was the equivalent of an RN who could also write prescriptions. I worked with patients who were recovering from surgery and injuries and began to study more and more about pain and healing as I observed those recovering patients. I learned medical massage, and saw how it helped patients recover quicker, and with less pain.
After I moved to Chicago with my wife and daughter, I became licensed in medical massage and have been practicing for many years – sports injuries at Sub 5 Performance Center – a running facility that enhances runners and athletes, at pain management clinics, and doing pregnancy massage with an ob-gyn.
I wanted to learn even more about the art of healing and pain management, and so I went back to school and got my master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine. There I learned acupuncture, Chinese herbal remedies, and numerous massage techniques to quicken healing and reduce pain.
Today, I use all of my experience in both western and eastern healing to aid the clients I work with. Each client is unique in their needs, so I use a combination of techniques that best fit each particular situation.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting over in the US was a struggle. In Ukraine, I could write prescriptions. The medical world works totally different there than in the US. Language was initially a challenge – am happy to say I am fully immersed in English now. Going to back to school in my forties (and not in my native language) while working to support my family – wife and daughter. Learning to be an entrepreneur in holistic medicine and build a base of clients from the ground up
NatureMed Acupuncture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
NatureMed Acupuncture offers a truly unique healing experience – combining the techniques of acupuncture and medical massage with knowledge of eastern and western medicine to treat pain and other health conditions.
What I’ve learned is that there is much more you can do without using pharmaceutical drugs to heal quicker and with less pain. My initial training was in western medicine as a physician’s assistant – I very much understand drugs, drug interactions, and how pain and drugs can impact the healing process. But many of the drugs that are related to pain management are highly addictive and may not have the lasting impact of fully resolving the health issue or pain.
Stress, anxiety, and chronic pain are highly responsive to acupuncture and massage. Other health issues that can be effectively treated are allergies, headaches and migraines, infertility, erectile dysfunction, sports injuries, arthritis, asthma, back pain, cancer care, carpel tunnel, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, neck pain, weight loss, smoking cessation, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, facial rejuvenation, menopause, IBS, and insomnia.
What makes my day is when a client says – “The pain is gone!” Knowing I’m able to help people, and that they tell others I can help them.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Knowing I’m able to help people, and that they tell others I can help them.
Here is one of my testimonials that means a lot to me:
My name is Julia, I am 40 years old and live in Chicago. I can safely say that Oleg saved my life. A few months ago, just 3 months after the birth of my baby, I experienced an extreme case of hyperthyroidism. The T3 and T4 hormones were seven times the normal levels, and conversely, the TSH was 7 times below.
The condition had worsened to a degree that I could no longer walk or even speak and had constant body and joint ache and high fevers as if I had a nasty case of flu – none of the drugs from the endocrinologist worked. My husband, a doctor himself, is a big believer in acupuncture.
I started with Oleg’s colleague who developed the treatment plan and performed one session; she had to leave the city for three weeks and had Oleg take over from there on. After two acupuncture sessions with Oleg, 3 altogether in just one week, all my hormone levels were back to normal.
I continued to work with Oleg for a few months. I am pretty sure that not every acupuncturist can do the miracles like Oleg did. His extensive training, scientific approach, care and patience made him exceptional and his treatment plans most effective. Thank you, Oleg!
